Parliament

I got to cover Parliment today!! Awesome
(*UPDATE*) I did NOT get to go in to the house of commons because American papers/wire services arent allowed. It makes sense if you think about it, why would PoDunk, MO care about British legislation that affects Leeds, England? But still annoying. We tried to get me in, but they wouldnt let me. Then the reporter from News of the World (a pretty ridiculous tabloid) said he'd take me in, but I figured they would rember my face. But kinda funny that he gets in and the AP doesnt!

The press gallery is in the area of the Houses of parliament in the above picture. I kept getting distracted because Big Ben would ring every 15 minutes. Plus, protesters were screaming about god knows what outside. None of the other reporters even looked up, haha.
The Parliament reporter and I spent the morning reading through reports and listening to the Prime Minsters Questions. (*UPDATE*) I did NOT get to go in to the house of commons because American papers/wire services arent allowed. Then after eating lunch in the downstairs cafeteria (thats right, an actual lunch break! At the bureau, you just eat a sandwich at you desk if you have the time...), we attended a foreign office cabinet meeting about UK-Russia relations. I ended up helping out with a Russia story and an Afganistan story, and covering a woman from Iran who could be stoned to death if she returns to Iran becuase she converted to Christianity. Interesting, huh?
It was a pretty slow day, as recess begins next week. The reporter I shadowed likened it to the week before classes let out in school.
But still, it was a really cool feeling being in Parliament as a reporter, not just as a tourist. To get to talk to people and hear everything that was going on instead of just taking pictures with the bobbies outside was so different. And so fun!
